New Guinea Rosewood, scientifically known as Pterocarpus indicus and often referred to as Amboyna, stands as a testament to nature’s artistry and resilience.
Originating from South East Asia and the Pacific Islands, this exquisite hardwood boasts a rich reddish-brown hue and intricate grain patterns making it highly prized for making furniture.
Listed as a vulnerable species, only small quantities are imported into Australia.
Highly durable, New Guinea Rosewood is known for its strength and resistance to decay and rot. It can withstand moisture and humidity variations well, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It’s natural oils contribute to its durability, providing protection against pests and fungal growth.
New Guinea Rosewood exhibits excellent stability, showing minimal shrinkage, warping, or movement even in changing environmental conditions. Its low coefficient of expansion and contraction makes it ideal for use in areas with fluctuating humidity and temperature levels.
Prized for its unique aesthetics, New Guinea Rosewood is characterised by its rich reddish-brown colours and grain patterns. The wood often features burls, swirls, fiddleback and more, creating a visually attractive appearance.
